Pronounced "Waa - Ez", the term is an Arabic word that means preacher, speaker or an orator. Traditionally it is a honor given to highly knowledgeable scholars who have mastered the art of public speaking in various humanity disciplines such as theology, sociology, philosophy and jurisprudence.
In the recent century, from its ever turbulent land, Afghanistan has given rise to many respected scholars who worked endlessly to bring freedom, peace and justice to its people. Ayatollah Sayyed Muhammad Sarwar Waez was one of such figures who tirelessly and boldly worked to teach moral values and the true essence of justice and freedom. As a revolutionary scholar he did not fear endless threats from the monarch government or the communist regime that followed in the late 1970s. Continuously in and out of government prisons, he sacrificed everything from the safety of his family to his own life.
The balance of passion, logic, bravery, and reason in his speech gathered audience from all over the country. His original last name was Hussaini, however shortly after he began speaking publicly, community elders and people named him Waez.
Anwar and Jafar, his two eldest sons followed in his footsteps and they both sacrificed their time and peace of mind to pave a path towards unity and hope. Across their unforgiving journey of service, they proved they were their father’s sons and Waez on their own rights. His sons, daughters and grandchildren endured the many challenges that come with migration and starting from zero. Today they are at the top of the professions in the fields of chemistry, medicine, psychology, theology and technology. Through these professions they support local communities in Afghanistan and abroad.
